Go Green in 2011
January 13, 2011
Now that the 2010 holidays have come and gone, many Americans have resolved to make 2011 the greenest year ever; pledging to reduce environmentally harmful behaviors and instead, practicing cleaner, healthier ways of living. But if you, like many Americans, find yourself confused about where to start, we’ve compiled a list of easy, quick tips to get you to reach your New Year’s resolution.
- Recycle: Everything from paper and plastics, to electronics and metals can be recycled to reduce landfill space and energy resources. If you don’t recycle materials such as electronics, they go directly to landfills and cause high levels of toxins which impact the health of the surrounding communities.
- Investing in compost: If you own a home, compost is an easy way to reduce garbage and benefit the soil. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, compost reduces landfill waste by as much as 25% (EPA).
- Buy used or borrow: Books, music, movies can be borrowed from your local library or bought used to reduce emissions used to manufacture new products. Even your clothes and furniture can be bought used at your neighborhood thrift store or online.
- Abstain from plastics: Going plastic free in 2011 saves money and helps protect the environment. Instead of buying plastic water bottles, opt for reusable containers and bring a cloth grocery bath when shopping.
- Laundry: Remember to only do laundry when you have a full load, with cold water, and using a non-toxic laundry detergent. If possible, you can also hang your clothes out to dry for a more eco-friendly way to do your laundry.
- Unplug appliances and turn off lights: If you’re not using an appliance or electronic, it’s best to leave it unplugged to save on energy. Every time you leave a room, turn off lights as well. Remember to purchase appliances that have an Energy Star label to guarantee efficiency.
- Use non-toxic cleaning products or make your own: Buy environmentally friendly cleaning products or make your own using ingredients like vinegar, lemon, baking soda; homemade cleaning products are the healthiest to use.
- Use cloth washcloths instead of paper towels or napkins: Take old pieces of clothing, such as socks and cut up t-shirts for dusting, and use cloth napkins at the dinner table.
We hope these tips will get you to become a green machine in 2011. For more information, please read other articles on our website: http://greenproductcompany.com/ .
